Hapers Wine Stars 2019 Winners

The WineBarn’s portfolio was a sparkling success as German wines shone bright in the Harper’s Wine Stars 2019 Awards.

Unique to the world of wine, Harpers Wine Stars is judged by buyers for buyers, rigorously assessing wines on their commercial qualities - taste, value and design. Each wine is judged by multiple professional wine buyers, giving a more well-rounded audit.

Allendorf’s 2014 Rüdesheimer Riesling, highly impressed judges. This exceptional wine scooped four awards - the ‘Star of Germany’ - the highest scoring wine of all of Germany, ‘Star Taste’ being Germany’s highest scoring wine with regard to taste, ‘Star of Rheingau’ being the highest scoring wine of the Rheingau region and ‘Five Stars’ being the highest rating for being an outstanding wine that comes highly recommended. Allendorf’s dry Riesling has plenty of sweetness, an elegant acidity and pleasant flavours of orange and peach. Judges described it as a “great wine” and “terrific value”.

Göttelmann’s 2016 Dautenpflänzer Riesling Dry wine also did exceptionally well in the competition. It was nominated for three awards; ‘Star Value’ being the best value for money, ‘Star of Nahe’ being the highest scoring wine from that region and was also awarded a ‘Five Star’ rating.
Judges commented, “This wine represents excellent value for money, showing depth of age and length that can go on for ages. The wine is serious and complex, but has a hint of sweetness. We all agreed that this wine had great depth.”

Wirsching’s 2018 Iphöfer Kalb Silvaner Premier Cru Dry proved to be a popular fruity white wine. It won the ‘Star of Franken’ - being the highest scoring wine in that region - and was also given a ‘Five Star’ rating.
Judges described this Silvaner as having a, “fresh, vibrant, floral quality with a good waxy texture”.
Due to its popularity, this wine has currently sold out, but we are expecting a delivery imminently.

Schloss Reinhartshausen’s 2016 Erbach Hohenrain Riesling “Old Vines" Dry wine received a ‘Five Star’ rating, with judges agreeing that it is well priced, has good acidity, fruit and concentration. They described it as “juicy, fruity and spritzy”.

Schneider’s 2018 Melaphyr Riesling QbA Dry was also given a ‘Five Star’ rating. The judges agreed that this modern, crisp Riesling is “Good quality, and has nice fruit on the nose and palate”. They also commented that it is “Great value for money”.
