Wine Critic, Matthew Jukes, reviews
Meyer-Näkel's 2018 Spätburgunder S;

"This beautiful Pinot Noir manages to balance resplendent mid-palate fruit density with a sonorous aroma and cool, long finish.  Germany is slowly becoming a Pinot Noir force to reckon with and there are a good few world-class wines made here, but they tend to be fearfully expensive.  Having said this, too many are still lean and foresty and so when a buoyant, silky, exotically proportioned wine like this comes along, I sit up and pay attention. With only 50% new barrels employed for 12 months the oak merely seasons the ripe fruit and allows it to sing in the glass.  This is a perfectly balanced Pinot Noir and having published my 2018 Burgundy Report on my website only a few weeks ago, if this wine had been in the mix, it would certainly have gained one of my coveted ‘QP’ gradings!"

"Their earliest harvest ever: started end of August, finished mid September. They had to pick like crazy, without stopping. Cold maceration for five days at 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), then the juice warms up and fermentation starts spontaneously (for most of their wines she does a mix of natural and inoculated fermentation). Aged in 50% new oak for 12 months. Meike Näkel uses only French oak. They saw that there was no water in summer, so they reduced yields in order to reduce stress on the vines.
Clear as a bell on the nose. Such a fruit-forward Pinot nose! No sign of oak - it's melted into the deep intensity and sweetness of the ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit. Tannin structure is beginning to creep in here, firm but still slender and polished. Delicious peppery spice on the mid palate. Cool finish. A seriously classy Spätburgunder."

Fully ripened grapes which yielded about 35-40 hl/ha, were hand-picked for this Spätburgunder. The vineyard soil had a composition of slate and greywacke.The grapes were gently crushed, then must fermentation and maceration took about 20 days. The wine matured in barrique (French oak barrels) for about 12 months (50% new oak).

Meyer-Näkel's 2018 Spätburgunder S has a complex bouquet of blackberry, elderberry, red cherry, raspberry, vanilla and dark chocolate, with the essence of cedarwood. It has elegant tannins, and a good structure & intensity on the palate. This Spätburgunder has a multi-layered aftertaste and good potential.

Drinking recommendation: Drink at a temperature of 15-16°C. This wine goes well with poultry, light meat, pasta and mushrooms, and also as a companion to grilled spiced fish.
