Wirsching’s 2016 Iphöfer Julius Echter Berg Riesling Grand Cru dry won the Gold Decanter World Wine Award 2019. It was awarded an admirable 95 points.
A concentrated and powerful wine, its distinctive mineral notes reflect the terroir and its aroma of ripe peach defines the strong character of this Grand Cru. Additionally, the fine hints of citrus notes provide a pleasant tension on the palate. The crisp, but subtle acidity gives the wine its delicate structured body and encourages you to enjoy the next sip. Thanks to its complex finish the pleasure lasts even longer.
On the palate is has a spicy, strong yet smooth, herbal flavour, characterised by mineral notes coming from the soil that evolve slowly on the palate. On the nose there are mineral notes from the soil, as well as hints of wild herbs, ripe peach, honey, melon, grapefruit, white pepper and exotic yellow fruits.
This Riesling Grand Cru is one the premium wines from first-class Franconia site "Julius-Echter-Berg”, but to create such a premium wine, a great deal of work was necessary in both the vineyard and the wine cellar. In the early stages of ripeness, for example, each vine was divided to ensure perfect conditions for the future vegetation process and to reduce the number of grapes on the vines. This concentrated the vine’s growth and efficiency on the few grapes left.
Enjoy this wine with fish, light meat or salads. It's also pairs perfectly with creamy sauce dishes.
