Meyer-Näkel 2019 Spätburgunder S

Meyer-Näkel 2019 Spätburgunder S

Regular price £47.99

This Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) was produced from red grapes grown in the Ahr region, between Dernau and Ahrweiler. These vineyards have extremely steep slopes and soil rich in slate and greywacke, providing optimal conditions for Spätburgunder.

Vinification: The fully riped of grapes are hand picked, producing a yield of about 35-40 hl /ha. Grapes are then gently treatment pressed to produce must. Fermentation and maceration takes around 20 days, followed by maturation in barriques (French oak barrels) for 12 months.

Tasting Notes: This dry Spätburgunder has a bouquet of blackberry, elderberry, cherry, raspberry, vanilla and dark chocolate, with hints of cedarwood. It has elegant tannins, a good structure and intensity on the palate, as well as a multi-layered aftertaste.

Food Recommendation: At a drink temperature of 15-16°C, this wine pairs well with poultry, light meat, pasta and mushrooms. It is also an excellent companion to spicy or grilled fish.

Absolute masterpiece

The Meyer-Näkel 2019 Spätburgunder S is an absolute masterpiece for Pinot Noir lovers. Crafted with precision in the steep vineyards of the Ahr region, this wine is a perfect example of how terroir and craftsmanship come together to create something extraordinary.

The first thing that struck me was the complex bouquet—a harmonious blend of blackberry, elderberry, cherry, and raspberry, with luxurious hints of vanilla, dark chocolate, and cedarwood. It’s aromatic and inviting, setting the stage for what’s to come.

On the palate, it’s equally impressive. The elegant tannins and excellent structure make for a smooth, balanced wine with just the right amount of intensity. The finish is multi-layered and lingers beautifully, leaving you wanting another sip. Despite its depth, it remains wonderfully approachable.

This Spätburgunder is incredibly versatile with food. I enjoyed it with roasted chicken and a mushroom risotto, but I can easily see it shining alongside pasta, grilled fish, or even light game dishes. At 15–16°C, it’s the perfect temperature to reveal all of its complexities.

The fact that it’s hand-harvested and matured in French oak barrels for 12 months is evident in the wine’s sophistication. At £47.99, it’s a bit of an investment, but it’s worth every penny for a special occasion or for those who truly appreciate high-quality Pinot Noir.

If you’re a fan of elegant red wines with depth, complexity, and a nod to their origins, this Meyer-Näkel Spätburgunder is a must-try. I’ll definitely be adding it to my rotation!
