Bassermann-Jordan

The Jordan family first established the estate in 1718. Since then, the Bassermann-Jordan dynasty has produced leaders in Germany’s political, cultural and viticultural circles over the centuries. Ludwig Bassermann-Jordan was a founding member of what became today’s VDP, the prestigious association of Germany’s 200+ finest wine estates. The estate is also home to the Museum of Historical Wines which holds wines from as early as 1811. This wine estate dates back over 300 years when wine production first began.  The estate covers around 49 hectares with more than 20 different vineyard sites.  One third are top rated vineyards such as Hohenmorgen, Kirchenstück and Jesuitengarten.  Priority is given to the careful handling of the grapes involving painstaking manual work which results in wines of great character.  There is an ethos of working with the land and they only use of natural products for pest prevention.

We started organic farming in a part of our vineyards in 2006. Since 2010 all vineyards where farmed organic. Since 2014 we use the Certificate for organic farming.  Our winery has opted for organic viticulture out of conviction, because we firmly believe that this is the best way to both produce high-quality wines and protect the environment.

  1. Respect for nature: In organic viticulture, we completely avoid synthetic chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers. Instead, we rely on natural products that keep the soil and vines healthy. In this way, we preserve the ecological balance and promote biodiversity in our vineyards - in other words, we create a habitat for many beneficial insects, plants and animals.
  2. Soil care and sustainability: Healthy soils are at the heart of organic viticulture. By using compost, green manure and avoiding pesticides, the soil remains alive and fertile, even for future generations. We want to work sustainably and ensure that our soils remain healthy for a long time so that we can continue to harvest high-quality grapes for many years to come.
  3. Conservation of resources: It is important to us to use water and energy as efficiently as possible. Through careful cultivation methods, we avoid unnecessary consumption and reduce our carbon footprint. This protects the environment and contributes to climate protection.
  4. Highest quality and taste: Organic cultivation not only benefits the environment, but also the quality of our wines. Healthy vines that thrive without aggressive chemicals develop more intense aromas and produce wines that reflect the terroir - i.e. the character of our region - particularly well. We want our wines to bring nature and its diversity to life in every bottle.
