In Walporzheim, the Ahr valley becomes more narrow. The hill sides become steeper and are shaped as terraces, which is why the vineyards have a long-standing reputation for being the best in the region.

The name of the vineyard goes back to the Romans who settled near Walporzheim and cultivated wine and herbs in the Kräuterberg because of the excellent climatic condition.

The steepness and the intense direct sunlight create a nearly Mediterranean microclimate. The soil consists mainly of slate and greywacke stone.

The fully ripened, hand-picked grapes produced a yield of 30hl/ha. The grapes are then gently pressed, aged in barrique (French oak barrles made of 70% new oak) for about 16 months.

Meyer-Näkel's 2017 Walporzheimer Kräuterberg Spätburgunder Grand Cru dry is a powerful, rich and elegant wine. It has a complex, ripe aroma of blackberry, raspberry, plum and dark chocolate with hints of spice and liquorice. This Spätburgunder has a well-balanced tannin structure and good potential.

Tasting notes by Tamlyn Currin

"Darker fruit than their other GG reds, with a touch of violet perfume. Pepper, rounded fruit with a touch of purple, touch of sweet charcuterie. Tannins are silky fine but pressing persistently and gently on the fruit, almost sensuous. The texture on this wine is amazing - you really feel it in all corners of your mouth, but caressing. This seems smoother, heavier (without heaviness), as if this is the more languid of the wines. Beautiful long seam of spice running from start to finish."
