Getting to Grips with German Wine at 'Grip the Grape 2020'

The WineBarn were delighted to welcome a record number of guests to our 20th Annual Portfolio Tasting this January. Hosted at the Army & Navy Club in London, our 'Grip the Grape' event gave wine lovers, sommeliers and illustrious experts the exclusive opportunity to taste some of the most sophisticated wines in the world. With over 120 wines available to taste, including sparkling Sekts, elegant Spätburgunders (Pinot Noir), vintage Rieslings and noble Dessert wines, there was something to get everyone’s juices flowing.

Guests had a chance to deepen their knowledge of wine production, learning directly from the winemakers themselves, who joined us from Germany. They were on hand to guide guests through their regions' unique climates & soils, grape varieties, cellar techniques and more. We were also pleased to introduce Kranz, the latest wine producer to join our portfolio. Kranz are a family-run organic wine producer based in the Pfalz region of Germany. Committed to sustainable, quality-oriented viticulture, Kranz produce award-winning, VDP standard wines.

The team were very thrilled to receive some wonderful feedback from our guests;

“Some particularly exciting wines on show, which reminded me that Germany has a lot more than just Riesling going on. Tried some beautifully balanced and very elegant Spätburgunders, as well as a couple of really excellent Grauburgunders. Of course the Rieslings were also excellent, ranging from racingly dry all the way to hugely sweet; all the way through displaying concentration, finesse and power. Thanks to the Wine Barn team for putting on such an excellent event!”
- Tim Milford, Wine Blogger for Vinspire

“A spectacular German wine tasting. The flavours of the Rieslings, Spätburgunders, Weissburgunders, Gauburgunders and Silvaners really showed the goodness of their terroir, and the unique flavours of their land. The wines were rich, intense, classy and bursting with flavour."
- Rui Paulo Pereira, Sommelier

“Some of the standouts from today’s tasting of German wines from The WineBarn include - Pinot Noir Eiswein from Friedrich Becker, outstanding Rieslings from Weingut Groebe and the curiosity of Frühburgunder from Weingut Bischel. A really superb tasting.”
- Tivoli Wines

If you were unable to make this event, we have two more wine tasting events coming up in Oxford and Cambridge this March. To learn more, click here.
